Correction: The Serinity Prayer

In my Acceptance blog of 24 March, I incorrectly said that the Serenity prayer was written by St Fransis of Assissi. It was in fact not, and for this I humbly apologise.

The Serenity Prayer was written in the 1930’s by an American preacher called Reinhold Niebuhr and was then adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous and various 12-Step programs following the success of AA.

Serenity Prayer:
Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things i cannot change,
The courage to change the things i can,
And the wisdom to know the difference

The Prayer of St Francis:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen
